What You Need to Know About Dental Bridges

    Last updated 2 months ago

Missing teeth can affect the look and function of your smile. A dental bridge is a permanent appliance that replaces missing teeth to restore your self-confidence and dental health. Talk to your dentist if you have questions about replacing teeth with a dental bridge to find out how you can benefit from this treatment.

What Is Involved In Getting a Bridge?
A dental bridge is permanently cemented in your mouth. It is held in place with crowns affixed over adjacent healthy teeth. A bridge can be used to replace one or many missing teeth if they are all in a row. The anchor teeth are first prepared by your dentist, who shaves away parts of the tooth enamel to facilitate capping with a crown. Dental impressions are taken to design the shape, size, and color of your bridge so it appears natural in your mouth. After your bridge has been fabricated, a second dental appointment is scheduled for placement. Your dentist will check your bridge before permanently cementing the crowns to the anchor teeth, completing your new smile.

How Do I Care for a Bridge?
Dental care for a bridge is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Floss around the anchor teeth and consider using a floss threader to help you reach between the gums and the bottom of your bridge. This will prevent plaque buildup on the bridge and along the gum line, which can lead to periodontal disease and gum recession, affecting the appearance of your bridge. Brush your teeth regularly twice a day with fluoride toothpaste; brush the bridge as well during this process to keep it clean and plaque-free.

    An Overview of Dental Bonding

    Last updated 2 months ago

The appearance of your smile can have a significant impact on your comfort and self-confidence. Chips, cracks, and discoloration can be addressed with a procedure called dental bonding. Your dentist can perform dental bonding painlessly during a single visit to drastically improve tooth shape, color, and alignment.

    Problems Bonding Corrects
Your dentist may suggest bonding as an option to repair teeth that have been injured or chipped. Bonding can also be used to lengthen teeth that have been worn down by tooth grinding. In addition, this technique can be used to improve the color of your teeth or replace previous fillings made of metal for a more natural appearance. Dental bonding can even be used to address small gaps or overlaps between teeth for a straighter smile without the need for orthodontics.

    Steps in the Bonding Procedure
It takes approximately 30 minutes to treat each tooth. In many cases, your smile can be corrected in only a single dental visit. You and your dentist will decide upon the shade of resin you wish to use. Next, they will carefully roughen the surface of your tooth and paint the composite resin material onto it. They will then shape the resin until the desired effect is achieved before hardening it with a handheld ultraviolet light. Finally, the bonding material will be polished to match the rest of your natural teeth.

    Other Considerations
Although the composite resin used in dental bonding is extremely strong, it is not as sturdy as your natural tooth enamel. Avoid chewing on ice, pens, or fingernails, and talk to your dentist if you are prone to tooth grinding. Smoking and consuming certain foods and drinks may stain the bonding material, so ask your dentist for a list of items to avoid immediately after your procedure.
